From the Classroom to the Court: Kindergartners Celebrate the Knicks
Students in Mrs. Rebholz’s kindergarten class at William E. DeLuca Elementary School turned their love for the New York Knicks into an unforgettable learning experience filled with teamwork, creativity and school spirit.
Throughout the basketball season, students celebrated game days by wearing Knicks gear, hosting classroom watch parties and cheering on their favorite team. As excitement grew during the playoffs, students used their enthusiasm to create a schoolwide celebration.
During Writer’s Workshop, students applied their opinion writing skills by creating a persuasive proposal to their principal explaining why the school should celebrate Knicks Day. They shared ideas about building school spirit, encouraging teamwork and bringing the community together. Their proposal was approved, and Knicks Day became a special schoolwide event.
The Knicks theme was incorporated across the curriculum. Students practiced math skills by tracking basketball scores, adding points, comparing numbers and recording totals. They explored New York City landmarks in social studies, including Madison Square Garden, and wrote letters to Knicks players sharing their encouragement and support.
The classroom and hallways were transformed with student-created banners, posters and decorations celebrating the team. After a season filled with learning and excitement, students celebrated the Knicks’ championship victory with their own classroom Championship Parade featuring crowns, medals and a championship trophy.
