Learning Comes to Life at Robert Moses Middle School

Posted Date: 05/18/26 (12:00 AM)

Seventh grade students at Robert Moses Middle School recently participated in a dynamic and engaging America 250 Spirit Week, an immersive educational initiative designed to deepen their understanding of American history and civic responsibility.Throughout the week, students explored key themes such as freedom, democratic values and the responsibilities of citizenship. Lessons and activities brought history to life, highlighting the contributions of founding figures through creative, hands-on projects. Faculty members also joined in the experience, with teachers dressing as Founding Fathers and the social studies department demonstrating unity by wearing America 250-themed attire.

Students made meaningful connections to Long Island’s role in the Revolutionary War while also gaining a broader and more inclusive perspective by examining the often-overlooked contributions of women and African Americans. As part of the experience, students created their own versions of the “Declaration of Independence,” reflecting on personal freedoms and the principles that matter most to them.

The week culminated in thoughtful student reflections, encouraging learners to consider their role in shaping the future of the nation. Classrooms and hallways were transformed into vibrant showcases of student work, celebrating both historical understanding and creative expression.

“America 250 Spirit Week stood out not only for its strong academic focus, but also for the sense of energy and unity it fostered within the school community,” said Eliot Lewin, coordinator of social studies and social sciences for grades 6-12. “The initiative reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to providing meaningful and engaging learning experiences that inspire students to connect the past with the present and future.”
