Growing Green: Garden Club’s New Tower
North Babylon High School’s Garden Club students took hands-on learning to the next level as they assembled and planted the school’s new aeroponic grow tower. The tower will be used to grow a variety of fresh produce including Bibb lettuce, kale, arugula, rainbow chard and basil.
The innovative growing system allows plants to thrive without soil, using nutrient-rich water to support rapid and efficient growth. Students will be able to monitor the tower and care for the plants throughout the growing process, with a harvest expected in just a few weeks.
The project was made possible through a grant secured via Western Suffolk BOCES as part of the “Creating Healthy Schools and Communities” initiative, which supports programs that promote wellness, sustainability and hands-on learning opportunities for students.
This exciting addition to the Garden Club provides students with real-world experience in agriculture, sustainability and environmental science while also supporting healthy eating and schoolwide wellness initiatives. Through this project, students are not only growing fresh produce but are growing knowledge, responsibility, and a deeper connection to sustainable practices.
