Reading Buddies Reinforces a Love of Literacy
North Babylon School District’s Reading Buddies after-school club continues to bring middle school and elementary students together through a shared love of books. Once a month, participating Robert Moses Middle School students visit William E. DeLuca Elementary School to read aloud to their “little buddies,” creating meaningful connections across grade levels.
Prior to each visit, middle school students carefully select a book and practice reading it fluently to ensure an engaging experience for their younger partners. The program helps middle schoolers build confidence, strengthen reading fluency and develop leadership skills while serving as positive role models.
Elementary students benefit as well by listening to fluent readers, engaging with older peers and fostering an early love of reading in a supportive and fun environment.
On Dec. 17, members of the Reading Buddies club visited Ms. Mary Clare McGroary’s class, continuing this rewarding tradition and reinforcing the power of reading to connect students of all ages.
