Robert Moses Middle School recently hosts its first family literacy night. This night was filled with engaging literacy activities that parents could replicate at home. There were seven stations that parents and students could cycle throughout the evening. Presentations for parents included how to talk to their children about the books they are reading even when they don’t know what the book is about, reading incentives that can be used at home, how to choose a just right book and what makes a good reader. There were also stations where students could decorate bookmarks and create blackout poems.
Two North Babylon Public Library representatives joined the RMMS librarian to inform parents about all the wonderful resources the North Babylon Public Library provides. Lastly, there was a game station where families could play different word games together like Scrabble, Boggle, Bananagrams, Scattergories and more. Ten students won the latest editions of “Dog Man” and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” It was a great night for families to connect with each other while learning about how to spark a love of reading!
