North Babylon High School’s Advanced Placement environmental science class recently took a field trip to the Quogue Wildlife Refuge. The students started the day at the wildlife rehab facility with species such as barred owls and peregrine falcon. The class hiked through the pine barrens and observed the various plants trees (conifers) and scrub oak. The students saw firsthand examples of secondary succession and how fire plays a role in the ecosystem. They performed several tests – including soil profiling and weather observations – as well as observing biodiversity. Students ended the day at the nature center, where they viewed extensive mounted specimens of plants and wildlife native to the area.
