Mindfulness lessons ‘flow’ at Parliament Place

North Babylon-Parliament Place Elementary School students have hit the ground running. Since school reopened in September, first graders in Mrs. Rubio’s dual language class, have built a “rainbow of kindness,” while simultaneously learning an important lesson in mindfulness.

Sitting beside their desks, students inhale as they form their rainbows and exhale, while wearing their masks, to allow their colors to figuratively “flow” around them and their classmates.

Mrs. Rubio said, “Our rainbow of kindness hovers over us and we share our rainbow with others as we partake in acts of kindness throughout the day.”

Kindergarteners in Mrs. Cox’s class engaged in a similar exercise on Oct. 26 when District Social-Emotional Learning Liaison Kate Finnick visited their classroom. Tailoring to the students’ imaginations, she referred to mindfulness as their “super power,” and encouraged them to participate in several calming activities, focused on social-emotional wellness.
