Teen Read Week

Every year in October, libraries all over the nation celebrate Teen Read Week. Our middle school transforms the media center into the haunted library. This week-long event includes storytelling, lessons regarding oral history, book talking and so much more. Teen Read Week has quickly become a Robert Moses tradition.

Children’s Book Week

The coming of November brings not only Thanksgiving , but also Children’s Book Week. The North Babylon elementary school libraries celebrate the written works of a number of wonderful children’s authors. The goal of this program is to entice and encourage our young readers. Parents join in and read, read, read!

District Wide Read Aloud

In March, North Babylon High School and Robert Moses Middle School students visit all five of the district’s elementary schools to read to the younger students. Over 150 of our high school and middle school students provide tangible, positive role models for their younger counterparts.

Poetry Café

Every April, the Robert Moses Middle School and the North Babylon High School libraries celebrate National Poetry Month by inviting students to participate in the Poetry Café. Hundreds of students read their original poetry as well as published favorites to their peers. Musical accompaniment is performed by various string, flute, and vocal ensembles.

Author Visits

Published authors share their insights and expertise in regard to the writing process and industry. Past authors include Eric Craddock, who has written and illustrated a variety of graphic novels. Coming this year is James Devita, a YA novelist, and 1978 graduate of North Babylon High School.

Performance Workshops

Students in the North Babylon School District are introduced to the world of Shakespeare, Dickens, and other classical writers through theatre performance workshops. Students are enlightened as to how life was long ago by acting and dressing the part of a character in historically based dramas.

Distance Learning

Fly four hours to California to experience a professionally guided tour of whale watching. Why spend the time and money when you can obtain the same experience without leaving your school or spending a dime? Video conferencing enables students to see and hear the sights and sounds of happenings going on anywhere in the world. Experience live open heart surgery, the elephant sanctuary, the Museum of Modern Art, and more-- all available at your school library!
