Throughout the month of April, Woods Road Elementary School in North Babylon
celebrated National Poetry Month with a series of activities. Students read a gallery of
poems that were posted in the hallway of the building and participated in “Poem In Your
Pocket Day” by reading poems aloud to their classmates. Former Woods Road Principal
Steve Golub even contributed to the celebrations by reading a poem he specifically wrote
for Woods Road students.
As one of the culminating activities, many students wrote their own poems. Several
were selected to be published in the Young American Poetry Digest. Congratulations to the
following Woods Road poets:

The Young American Poetry Digest serves as a national audience for student writing
while providing a publishing opportunity for young poets. Poems were selected by a panel
of educators who evaluated the overall quality of the poem based on the student’s age,
grade level as well as creativity, language, images, structure and poetic techniques.
