Power of Words presentation

To continue to promote cultural proficiency and social emotional learning, the North Babylon Union Free School District partnered with the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove for a “Power of Words” presentation. Helen Turner, the Director of Education at the Center, streamed into all sixth grade social studies classes on May 17 and 18.

Turner led the students through reflective activities on how words make people feel. Through the presentation, students were able to define microaggressions and their impact on people’s feelings. The Power of Words lesson ended with a take action portion. Students were given examples of youth civic action leaders. They also discussed the importance of being an upstander and what they can do to help.
