To celebrate National Reading Month and Read Across America Day, elementary school students across the North Babylon School district have participated in an array of fun activities and reading events.
In addition, all elementary grade students recently dressed up as 100-year-old men and women to celebrate the 100 th day of school. Students practiced counting to 100 while making gumball machines out of cardstock and paint and decorated “100 Days Smarter”
headbands to wear throughout the day.
On March 2, William E. DeLuca Elementary School kicked off National Read Across America Day with its traditional read aloud of “The Cat in the Hat” by Dr. Seuss. Principal Vincent Fantauzzi, dressed as Thing 1, and first grade teacher Elyse Coromilas, dressed as the Cat in the Hat, read the story virtually to students, who then decorated their very own
iconic red-and-white striped top hats.
Students at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School, practiced reading with expression after singing and dancing along to Blazer Fresh’s original song, “Don’t Read Like a Robot,” available on GoNoodle.
To help inspire children to read, students at North Babylon High School have begun recording themselves reading picture books to share with their elementary school counterparts. Theater students in Lisa Drance’s class have also created "ads" of their favorite children's books to help instill a love of reading in elementary school students.
