April is National Poetry Month

First grade teacher, Christine Wilson created poems inspired by the NYS Assessments                                                       the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students took.

Another test?

We said goodbye to the ELA

And we all felt oh so great

Now we have to take a big math test

What is wrong with New York State?

Who makes these decisions?

Who decides what is best?

Cramming so much information

Into test after test.

In one breath they say, “Don’t you worry”

Or “Try not to get stressed”

These tests we are just grading to measure

Yours & your teacher’s future success.

Now please take out your #2 pencils

Get ready, get set and begin

Solve each problem carefully

Filling each & every bubble right in.

Remember to check all your work

Did you remember to carry the one?

How many cents are there in a quarter?

Can you change pounds into a ton?

Now tell yourself it doesn’t really matter

Do the best that we know that you can do

‘Cause tomorrows a brand new day

Where 1 plus 1 is still 2!

ELA – The First Day!

ELA, ELA, OMG…not today!

ELA, ELA, why won’t it go away?

There’s reading, writing & multiple choice

I wish they’d hear my worried voice.

My teachers say to breathe & do my best

That they’ve prepared me for this test

They want me to just relax

But I can feel THEIR heart attacks!

Reading stories…Ugh! I hate this part

Times a ticking, I’d better start

Long boring pieces, some absurd

Filled with words I’ve never heard.

Writing essays…now that’s the worst!

I feel my insides about to burst

I try to stay calm & to remember

This ridiculous test won’t last forever.

So, I take a deep breath & seek help from above

And know that my family is sending me love

My teachers are proud & believe in me too

Now it’s up to me to prove all I can do!

ELA – The Last Day!

Can you believe it?

Yes, it is true

Three long days ago

But now we are through

We stressed & we worried

Then found our ‘happy place’

We read and we wrote

Then we had to erase.

Our answers now checked

Our labels stuck tight

We all did our best

Never gave up the fight.

So we take a deep breath

And feel like we’ve won

Leaving testing behind

Back to learning that’s fun!
