Celebrating Cultures and Communities!

Our wonderful 3rd grade students were invited to the library to experience all the wonders of Mexico.  They were able to explore the artifacts in the Journey’s Discovery Chest exhibition from the Huntington Arts Council.  The exciting artifacts included traditional clothing, containers, pictures, instruments and so much more.  Students created their own Day of the Dead Masks in art to represent Mexican celebrations.  This program was a true collaboration between our 3rd grade classroom teachers, Mrs. Carolyn Whitney, Art Teacher, and Ms. Jennifer Olsen, School Library Media Specialist.

Belmont's 5th Grade Visits

the Moon with NASA

Students were welcomed to the library for the second part of our two part NASA series.  This time our students spoke with NASA Science Educator Dr. Long in regard to the Moon.  In preparation for this event students learned all about the first moon landing, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.   This NASA event focused on the phases of the moon.  Dr. Long answered many of the student’s questions.  These two events aligned with the students Solar System Research and Web Quest.  They also used their imaginations in Art class to create their own unique planets.  This collaborative effort included all of our 5th grade teachers, Ms. Olsen School Library Media Specialist and Mrs. Whitney Art Teacher.

Welcome To PARP

Learning to read is the single most important activity in a child’s education. PARP is a program that asks parents to read with their children for at least fifteen minutes daily, stressing the fact that reading can be fun as well as informative. The choice of reading materials can vary from books to anything with printed words. The daily activity of reading together strengthens reading and communication skills in the child and also strengthens the parent/child relationship!

This years theme as "Reading Around The World"...

3rd Grader China Discovery

We have brought the Journey's Discovery Treasure Chest to Belmont. This was made possible through an amazing collaboration between 3rd grade teachers, Ms. Olsen, School Library Media Specialist and Mrs. Whitney, Art Teacher. The museum artifacts were set up in the library and a special event was held for students to explore and discover more about China. The excitement was palpable as students beheld beautiful silks and hand painted items from China. Students were able to connect what they have learned about Chinese inventions to actual artifacts in the chest. This year is the year of the rooster! Mrs. Whitney was very proud to display the Chinese New Year Rooster Projects, created by the 3rd graders in art, as the backdrop for this wonderful event.

Belmont 5th Grade Researches 50 States

In collaboration with the 5th grade teachers Ms. Olsen, School Library Media Specialist Launched the Research Assess Program at Belmont.  Research is an important element in learning and our students began by researching the States.  Ms. Olsen modeled how to research on the World Book database during library class.  She then visited each 5th grade classroom to provide research support as the students navigated the World Book database answering their research questions.  Discussions in regard to the significance of using accurate sources for research occurred.  The students were very excited to learn so much about their state!!

Humble and Kind

Ninth-grade studio art students at the high school visited fifth-graders at Belmont Elementary School to participate in a collaborative project titled “Humble and Kind.”

As part of the lesson, students watched the music video for Tim McGraws’s song “Humble and Kind”, and then worked together to create inspirational posters containing messages and takeaways from the video. The freshman brought in posters they had worked on, and assisted fifth-graders with creating posters of their own using photos and cutouts from magazines. The activity- which was made possible by Jen Olsen hosting the students in the library and Veronica Murphy’s idea for the lesson- not only inspired students and encouraged them to be humble and kind, but also gave them the opportunity to work collaboratively with their counterparts.

Come On In!

The American Cancer Society Denim Day

Since Denim Day began in 1996, participants have raised more than $95 million to help save lives from breast cancer. This year, by joining together, we’ll add even more to that total. Donations will help the American Cancer Society fund groundbreaking breast cancer research; provide free, comprehensive information and support to those touched by breast cancer; and help people take steps to reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it's most treatable.

Thank you to all the staff and students at Belmont Elementary for participating in such a worthy cause!

The children in KC became chefs for the day as they learned the letter/sound relationship for Aa. They had a blast sorting, graphing, and counting all the apples brought in.  The best part was how delicious the applesauce was, and having fun.
