"Where are the Wild Things?....at Belmont Elementary School of course!"

Eighteen fifth graders, under the leadership of art teacher Carolyn Whitney, have created a family portrait of monsters on three large canvases.  The mural was inspired by a study of the classic book  by Maurice Sendak “Where The Wild Things Are”.  The students brought their monsters to life using acrylic paints and ink.  These canvases were on display at the Long Island Children's Museum, in Garden City throughout the months of December and January.  The students were invited to come to the museum, January 27th to view the artwork, enjoy a reception in their honor, and spend two hours exploring

the museum and all it has to offer.

The mural was part of a much larger interdisciplinary project, in which the entire fourth and fifth grade are participating.

Music teacher Mrs. Henderson, reading specialist Mrs. Levine,  librarian Ms. Bielskas and art teacher Mrs. Whitney have been working together to composeoriginal songs, write scripts, create three dimensional clay monsters, drawings, and collaborative posters around the "Wild Things" theme.  All of these pieces will be diplayed at a student performance in the Spring. We are proud of every student at Belmont for their enthusiastic participation in this "monstrously wild project".

The following student artists participated in the mural:  Sohaib B., Valerie B., Jahron C., Shannon D., Ariel D., Amanda D., Chamelea H., Paige H., Terrence J.,Isaiah K., McKayla L., Xavier L., Kelly M., Connor N., Julia R., Cori S., Patrick S., and Jordyn V.
