Star Lab

Through the use of modern technology, the fifth-grade students of the North Babylon School District participated in an in-house field trip to a traveling planetarium, Star Lab. The inflatable room-sized planetarium travels to schools across the island to further science curricula by giving students the opportunity to receive a clear and up-close look at a simulated night sky. As part of the fifth-grade curriculum, students study the solar system and all of its components. During the Star Lab program, the students learned about Greek mythology, constellations and the planets.

Prior to entering the lab, the fifth-graders participated in a 20-minute astronomy lesson with BOCES naturalist Richard Meyer regarding the Big Bang theory, in which they learned the age of the known universe (13.77 billion years), the sun (4.6 billion years) and the earth (4.56 billion years).

On April
30th, 2011 two lives were lost during an automobile accident with a
drunk driver. One of those lives was Dan
Gambardella who left behind wife Linda, a 16-year old son Danny, and a 7-year
old daughter Ava. A member of the North Babylon Baseball family and a pillar in
the community was lost forever. Many of the program’s players and countless
other young people in the community were at one time coached by Dan Gambardella
in both soccer and baseball. One of those players is his son Danny Gambardella
Jr. The bond between father and son through athletics was evident for anyone
who witnessed them on a field or just being in their presence.
The team
is dedicated to raising money by selling popcorn during lunch periods in school
and holding a raffle during the month of April. The proceeds will be going to
Linda, who will be doing a walk for MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) on
June 2nd. The North Babylon Baseball team will be playing a special
game on May 7th, 2013 in honor of Dan Gambardella by wearingspecial
jerseys with the MADD logo on the front. In a pregame ceremony the team will
present a check to Mrs. Gambardella for the MADD organization and the Dan
Gambardella Memorial Fund.

Dear Mr. President

Following their English language arts unit on writing persuasive and informative letters, the first-graders in Karen Bender’s class at North Babylon’s Woods Road Elementary School wrote individual letters to President Barack Obama. In their letters, the students asked questions of President Obama, including queries about his favorite color, food, etc. To the surprise and elation of the first-graders, the class received a response from the president, as well as a map of the White House and information on the life of Bo, the first dog.

In his letter, President Obama thanked the students for their thoughts and told them that the success of our nation depends on them and their generation. “As you grow and learn, remember that our country is counting on you to be a dedicated and hard-working student,” the president wrote in his letter. “I encourage you to set your sights high, aim for excellence in all that you do, and try each day to improve the lives of others in your community.”

Later in the spring, the students will practice their letter writing when they draft letters to the famous fictional characters at Disney World.

Mrs. Carlino and Mrs. Petraglia, along with Dr. Linda Catelli, Professor of Human Development and Learning at Dowling College, won the award for collaborative PDS Research involving a partnership between the Professional Development School (PDS) and Belmont Elementary School here in the North Babylon School District. The research was to serve as a major tool and vehicle for changing and improving, in an integrative way, the component parts of the PDS partnership, pre-and in service teacher education, and student learning. The AERA (American Educational Research Association) is America’s most prestigious national and international research association.

North Babylon Teachers Named Winners of the Claudia A. Balach Teacher Researcher Award

Joan Carlino and GinaMarie Petraglia, teachers from North Babylon’s Belmont Elementary School, in partnership with Linda A. Catelli, a Dowling College professor of education, have been named winners of the Claudia A. Balach Teacher Researcher Award, which is sponsored by the Professional Development School (PDS) Research Special Interest Group (SIG) of the American Educational Research Association.

Multicultural Celebration

For more than eight years, the North Babylon School District has been celebrating the diversity of its community through the annual Multicultural Celebration. The nearly three-hour event invites community residents to the high school to enjoy an assortment of activities, crafts and music.

This year, students from a number of the district’s schools and clubs sponsored a variety of stations focusing on specific cultures. Members of the high school’s National Honor Society welcomed all guests and handed out multicultural certificates, while Art Club members hosted a face painting station, Life Skills students helped visitors created Chilean rain sticks, and the Students for a Better World club supplied cookies representing flags from multiple nations. Elementary students from Belmont and Marion G. Vedder painted guests to their stations with Native American body art and created multicultural buttons, Polynesian leis and Guatemalan worry dolls. Additionally, William E. DeLuca and Woods Road English as a Second Language students sponsored a station that allowed those in attendance to create country flags.

Culminating the night was a performance by Napoleon Revels-Bey, who presented his “Rhythm Kings – Al Andalusia to Dizzy” program.

“Tonight is a celebration of our various cultures,” stated Dr. Maureen Fallon, director of social studies and language arts, who organized the event. “Our goal is to keep our own identities, but to also take the time to enjoy and respect the cultures of those around us.”

North Babylon Students Attend Model United Nations Conference at Hofstra University.

NB goes Global……………
North Babylon Students Attend Model United Nations Conference at Hofstra University.
Imagine becoming an ambassador to a country you may have only heard or read about in a textbook or the News. Imagine debating and solving world problems such as piracy in Somalia, human trafficking, child labor in South East Asia, and the future of the Arctic? Imagine becoming part of an International Disarmament and Security Committee, or a Historical Crisis Committee role playing the Cuban Missile Crisis ….. Well, that is exactly what 8 students from North Babylon High School did March 15-17 at the Hofstra University Model United Nations Conference with teacher/advisor Mrs. Diana Simulcik. For the first time students from North Babylon High School; Sana Sabir, Shelina Khan, Samuela Magny, Arielle Nadler, Megan Haggerty, Iqra Chohan , Semajh Bludson and Kevin White became delegates representing countries such as the Russian Federation, Afghanistan and the Sudan.
Students came together from many schools throughout Long Island and New York City to participate at Hofstra University’s Model United Nations Conference sponsored by the Political Science Department at Hofstra University headed by Dr. R. Perotti. Students prepared by researching and writing a position paper on key issues from the perspective of their individual countries. In addition, students acquired skills in parliamentary procedure, debating and drafting resolutions. Within the model UN atmosphere students began to cultivate their global literacy in a tone of friendship and cooperation as they became citizens of the world. The following are quotes from our delegates and a parent who had something to say about their experiences…………
“My experience at the MUN at Hofstra University was extremely positive. It helped to hone my debate and compromise skills and exposed me to many other students who are interested in world affairs. It was a very enjoyable experience and I would not hesitate to do it again”. Kevin White- Future Crisis Committee- Arctic Region- ** Awarded BEST DELEGATE
“I just wanted to talk about the amazing time I had at the HUMUNC. I had the opportunity to be the articulate student I knew was always inside of me. I got to meet so many new people and got to discuss
World issues. My committee, DISEC, actually passed a viable resolution that could easily work in real life. I can’t stress enough how excited I am to go back next year! Megan Haggerty – DISEC **Honorable Mention
“My experience at Hofstra Model United Nations 2013 conference was unforgettable. I had many reservations and concerns about attending and almost decided against it. All I will say however is that if anyone has the opportunity to attend…do it! ” Semajah Bludson –SOCHUM
“I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this wonderful opportunity that Arielle had, to be a part of the HUMUN. She enjoyed every minute of it. This whole experience had a wonderful positive impact on her and maybe on her future too.” M.Nadler SPECPOL
A good time was had by all……Be back next year!

Asian Brush Painting

Continuing their ongoing relationship with the Huntington Arts Council Journeys Program to bring real-life artists into classrooms, the North Babylon School District Fine Arts Department welcomed artist Sung Sook Setton. Working with third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students in Renee Blank’s art classes at Parliament Place Elementary School, Ms. Setton taught the students East Asian brush painting and Chinese calligraphy. Using traditional brushes, India ink and rice paper, the students created two nature art pieces that were used to kick off their in-class winter landscape project.

“It’s important to widen the students’ horizons in order for them to see what people do around the world in terms of art,” said Ms. Blank. “It gives the students a different approach, from the tools that are used to how they hold their brushes.”

Welcome to the 60s

It’s been said, “The show must go on!” and a little snow couldn’t stop North Babylon High School’s Drama Club from performing their musical “Hairspray” for a packed house for two shows on Feb. 10.

Set in the 1960s, “Hairspray” tells the story of Tracy Turnblad’s dream to be a featured performer on the dance television show “The Corny Collins Show.” Once her dream is realized, Tracy launches a campaign to racially integrate the show. Leading an outstanding cast of performers was Lauren Coccaro as Tracy Turnblad. Working alongside Lauren were Brian Frank as Tracy’s love interest Link, Katie Schneider as Tracy’s best friend Penny, Emily Winter and Dan Benson as Tracy’s parents, and Joseph Pascone, Carolyn Mistretta, Kayla Crowley, Billy Zangerle, Maria Pigatti and Elijah Andrews as Corny Collins, Velma, Amber, Spritzer, Motormouth and Seaweed.

David Signorelli directed the show with assistance from musical director Larry Wurtzel, costume designer MarySusan Noll, orchestra director Frank Rizzo, stage crew director Philip Handler and choreographer Erica Beal.

Celebrating Character on Valentine’s Day

Students at Robert Moses Middle School spread love this Feb. 14 as they participated in a variety of outreach and character-building activities.

The students in Kristen Pace’s Career Development Program and Michele Russo’s Life Skills class put their creativity to work using heart-shaped cutouts, markers and crayons to make Valentine’s Day grams. The grams were sold to students and staff and delivered by the CDP and Life Skills students on Valentine’s Day to their intended recipients.

Student Council members, along with their adviser Kathleen Gusmerotti, sold red carnations that were delivered on Valentine’s Day, with all of the proceeds donated to the American Heart Association. The student-raised funds were combined with the proceeds from Go Red Day, where staff members were allowed to dress down for work on Feb. 8. Between both fundraisers, RMMS donated more than $300 to the AHA.

Cooperative education project

Since the 2011 – 2012 school year, Mrs. Dolezal’s high school class has been participating in a cooperative education project with Mrs. Gryn’s kindergarten class at the Marion G. Vedder elementary school. This project still continues with this year’s group ofkindergartners. Having the high school students create, plan, and evaluate mini-lessons for the students in Mrs. Gryn’s class provides each person with a wonderful and valuable experience. Mrs. Dolezal’s students get the opportunity to explore potential careers with children for the future, they are able to use their life experiences to relate to others, and they serve as role models for the kindergarten students. Mrs. Gryn’s class brings out a whole new side to the high school students! They present them with the opportunity to be positive role models as well as to put the knowledge they have learned to a real life situation! Most importantly, these students all have developed friendships within the school environment!

A Tale of Two Teddy Bears

To kick off their two-week Parents as Reading Partners program, North Babylon students at Woods Road Elementary School learned the origin and history of teddy bears and how to draw their own bears when author and illustrator Kathleen Bart visited the school to present a program called “A Tale of Two Teddies: The History of the Teddy Bear.”

During this PARP program, Ms. Bart discussed how the teddy bear originated, as detailed in her book “A Tale of Two Teddies.” She noted that there were in fact two different kinds of teddy bears created over 100 years ago – one in Brooklyn, N.Y. and the other in Germany – and explained how the American bear was named after President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt.

At the end of the program, after a quick tutorial from Mrs. Bart, the students had the opportunity to create their own teddy bear designs. Mrs. Bart also donated copies of her story “A Tale of Two Teddies, The First Teddy Bears Tell their True Stories,” to each classroom’s individual library.

PARP features two weeks of activities, both in school and at home, designed to encourage parents or other family members to become active reading partners with their child or family member. The theme for this year’s Woods Road PARP is “The Reading Express.”

Learning About Gingerbread

To culminate their unit of study on gingerbread, second-grade students in the classes of Elyse Cormilas, Kelly Gregorio, Nicole Guida abd Maureen Pellegrino, at North Babylon's William E. DeLuca Elementary School participated in gingerbread-themed workstations.

Working in small groups, the students rotated through the classrooms in the second-grade wing to work at the various stations. Using edible gingerbread men, the second-graders utilized their math skills by tasting the cookies and graphing which portions of the cookies that they took their first bites of. The students then honed their English language skills by writing essays using their five senses to describe the gingerbread men. They also put their artistic talents to good use by decorating an edible gingerbread cookie, creating a gingerbread house using a paper bag, coloring a holiday placemat and making a holiday wreath from beads and ribbon.

As part of the New York State Common Core curriculum on gingerbread, the students studied its history, read fictional and nonfictional stories and worked on various writing projects.

The Fifth Graders at Parliament Place have been very busy working on the new Common Core ELA Module

The Fifth Graders at Parliament Place have been very busy working on the new Common Core ELA Module. In this unit the children learned all about the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. They have studied each article and discussed how important they are all over the world. December 10th was Human Rights Day and the students in Ms. Manning and Mr. Hein's class created t-shirts for this special day. Each child chose the five most important articles to them. Article 26, the right to an education, seem to be the overall favorite! A great job was done by all the children.

Honoring Veterans

The elementary students at Marion G. Vedder School honored veterans and current military service men and women on Friday, Nov. 9 at their annual Veterans Day Celebration. Gathering as a school community at the bus loop, high school band director Frank Rizzo played “Taps” as the American flag was raised, and the kindergarten through fifth-grade students recited the Pledge of Allegiance and were led by music teacher Laura Dellosso in singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.”

Following the schoolwide ceremony, the third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students performed a concert for the veterans, playing songs such as Teresa Jennings’ “We Are Proud of Our Veterans,” Woodie Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” and George D. Lottman and Charles Zimmerman’s “Armed Forces Medley.”

As an added feature to the celebration this year, flags decorated the front lawn of the school, with each dedicated in name of a specific veteran. Funds raised through the flag dedications were donated to Jacob’s Light Foundation, a Long Island organization devoted to sending America’s deployed military troops the necessities and comforts of home.

The Art of Inspiration

Using art to inspire students to be their best selves, Richard Hight, a nationally recognized chalk artist, visited the students at North Babylon’s Woods Road Elementary School to discuss character building and making the right choices. The PTA-sponsored event served to reinforce the themes that students have been learning in their classes, including tolerance, getting along and making good choices.

During his visit, Mr. Hight created an original 8-foot chalk drawing for the students that will be hung in the cafeteria. “The portrait is a fun, colorful person with their arms open wide to remind you that you are loved, you are important, and your choices affect you and those around you,” Mr. Hight explained to the students.

Following his completion of the drawing, the artist sat among the students and told them the story of how he became an artist, the choices he makes every day, and the importance of being true to oneself. “What makes you different is what makes you great,” he said. “Always remember, an original is worth more than a copy.”

DeLuca Librarian Publishes First Novel

Matt Erickson may spend his days instilling a love of reading in his students as the librarian of North Babylon’s William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School, but when he is off the clock, he’s busy keeping readers on the edge of their seats as a suspense thriller novelist.

Released in September, Mr. Erickson’s novel, “International Harvester,” is not for the faint of heart. A psychological thriller, the story, set in New York, follows the activities of Phillip Gant, a handsome and charismatic serial killer. “As an author, I want to take my readers on a journey, to build suspense and give them a satisfying ending,” said Mr. Erickson.

While the children Mr. Erickson teaches on a daily basis aren’t his target audience, he is still able to use his experience as a published author in his lessons. “In my library classes, I work with my students on creating their own stories. We will co-author creative writing pieces, where I’ll begin a story and the students will use their imaginations to complete the piece,” he explained. “I like to try and make library fun and interactive for the kids. I want them to understand the correlation between reading and writing.”

“International Harvester” is available for purchase online, in bookstores and as an ebook.

The Fifth Graders at Parliament Place were the FIRST students on Long Island to experience the new
"We Are Astronomers" experience at the Cradle of Aviation in Garden City. They were blown away by the true to life graphics. All the children in Ms. Manning, Mr. Morisie, and Mr. Hein's classes felt as if they returned from a space adventure when the show ended. Two of Ms. Manning's students share their thoughts on this very exciting field trip: Sean's favorite part was feeling like he was actually on one of the planets "It was like my feet were actually on the surface of Mars". Nicoletta's favorite part of the speed of light show. "It was just like we were on a light beam racing with each other! It felt like our seats were traveling in outer space!". After their space journey, the Cradle of Aviation treated the Fifth Graders to a special movie called
"Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure". This movie was perfect for their Social Studies curriculum! They learned all about this famous Irish Explorer! After they show they ate in the Red Planet where they ordered a yummy lunch filled with nutritious treats!

North Babylon Remembers

On Tuesday, Sept. 11, Robert Moses Middle School hosted a dedication ceremony where they unveiled their 9/11 memorial. Created by members of the art club, with assistance from club advisor Joyce Orrigo, the two six-foot structures are decorated with ceramic and glass mosaic tiles spelling out the Jimi Hendrix quote, “When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.”

During the unveiling ceremony, social studies teacher Dale Walden, who came up with the idea of the memorial and worked with Ms. Orrigo on the concept, spoke with the crowd. “I wanted our students to create a living memorial to all of those who passed on that terrible day. It was a learning experience for the students, not just an art experience, as many of the students were not around when this tragedy occurred,” he said.

Also speaking at the dedication were Superintendent of Schools Patricia Godek, Middle School Principal Kathleen Hartnett and Town of Babylon Councilman Tony Martinez. “It is remarkable to see the students of North Babylon – who were so young that day – dedicate their time to remembering and honoring those who lost their lives and those who survived,” remarked Ms. Godek.

Following the speeches, the select chorus performed two musical numbers, the memorial towers were unveiled and doves were released.

NBHS Students Shine at Science

Congratulations to North Babylon High School students Kevin White and Karan Kumar, whose science research projects were honored at various competitions.

Kevin’s project won first place in Chemistry at the Junior Long Island Science & Engineering Fair. In his award-winning research, Kevin investigated ways to improve the dye of sensitized solar cells, which are inexpensive replacements for the silicon panels used on solar panels. The main improvement of the project would be to enhance the performance (voltage, current) of the cell while under visible light irradiation.

Karan received honorable mention in the second round of the Long Island Science & Engineering Fair, as well as the fourth-place overall win at the Dowling College Science Fair. Regarding his project, Karan explained, “Past studies suggest that the inhalation of incense smoke may lead to cancer, but the specific cancer causing carcinogen has not been identified. An experiment was conducted using a particulate matter air aspirator. It was predicted that the higher the level of incense solution, the lower the survival and reproduction rate in the Drosophila.”

Legislative Breakfast

The North Babylon Council of PTAs continued their tireless support of the students, schools, and community of North Babylon as they hosted their annual Legislative Breakfast.

During the event, the PTAs welcomed New York State Senator Owen Johnson, New York State Assemblymen Philip Boyle, Andrew Raia, and Robert K. Sweeney, Suffolk County Legislator Majority Leader DuWayne Gregory, Suffolk County Legislator Deputy Presiding Officer Wayne R. Horsley, Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern, Town of Babylon Supervisor Richard Schaffer, Town of Babylon Councilmen Thomas Donnelly and Tony Martinez, and Gordon Canary, District Office Manager for Senator Johnson, to discuss issues facing North Babylon, tax cap legislation, and other important topics.

During her presentation, Superintendent of Schools Patricia Godek praised students and staff for their accomplishments in the classroom, on the athletic field, and on the stage. She also discussed the rapidly changing world of education, increasing state and federal standards, the influx of state and federal unfunded mandates, and declining state aid. “How do we provide an equitable education when there is no equitable funding?” she postulated.

Following Mrs. Godek’s presentation, the audience listened to comments from Board of Education Vice President Audrey Jacullo, Woods Road Principal Steven Golub, and President of the North Babylon Teachers’ Organization Selina Durio. Once all comments were heard, Ms. Durio served as moderator as the legislators fielded questions from the public.

North Babylon School Celebrates 50 Years of Education

The year was 1962, John F. Kennedy, Jr. was President of the United States, the average cost of a gallon of regular gas was 31 cents, and the North Babylon School District opened its Parliament Place Elementary School. To commemorate its 50-year anniversary, the school held a celebration of education. Looking on as Parliament Principal Drew Olson played master of ceremonies were Board of Education President Barbara Leun, Board Vice President Audrey Jacullo, Superintendent of Schools Patricia Godek, Assistant Superintendent for Business Salvatore Carambia, Town of Babylon Councilman Tom Donnelly, Gordon Canary representing New York State Senator Owen Johnson, and members of the PTA.

During the program, Mr. Olson welcomed retired Parliament staff members, two of whom were employed at the time of the school’s inaugural opening. As entertainment, kindergarten students performed the song “I’m So Glad,” while fourth graders discussed “What Parliament Means to Me” in essays that compared and contrasted student life in 1962 to that in 2012 and even projected for 2062. In addition, the PTA presented $1,000 to the school to help beautify the new reading and writing room.

“The teaching in North Babylon is phenomenal,” remarked Mrs. Leun. “In celebrating 50 years, the building may have changed, the artwork may have changed, but the teaching remains the same – phenomenal.” Added Mrs. Godek, “I may only have been here four and a half years, but one thing I’ve noticed about North Babylon is that it’s about community. Today is a great day to celebrate that community spirit and pride.”

To conclude the celebration, the fourth-grade chorus sang the school song, “Pride of Parliament,” after which guests enjoyed a brunch and visited classrooms to read stories.

North Babylon Orchestra Students Electrify Their Strings

For two days in March, 250 orchestra students in grades 5-12 at the North Babylon School District participated in a unique and educational program led by international recording artist Mark Wood. To culminate the two-day residency, a special concert was held for members of the community.

Mr. Wood, a Long Island native and founding member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, brought his program, entitled “Electrify Your Strings,” to the district, which gave North Babylon’s talented musicians the opportunity to play music composed by Wood as well as experience his solo compositions. Mr. Wood’s workshop focused on the art of improvisation for acoustic and electric strings, and he shared his techniques with North Babylon’s string musicians.

“The string teachers and I host an annual gathering for orchestra students so that they can all learn about working together,” stated District Director of Art and Music Programs Dr. Kim Lowenborg-Coyne. “We feel it's very important for the young students to see what lies ahead and for the more experienced students to be encouraged by what they have achieved.” In the past, the students have worked with the Daedalus String Quartet and the Metro Chamber Orchestra.

Continued Dr. Lowenborg-Coyne, “We selected Mark Wood because of his outstanding reputation as both string player and music education advocate. Mark has brought the students to know that you can't play without your heart; that technique is not enough; and that "hitting the audience right between the eyes" with the music is always the target. We are grateful to him for his dedication, praise and hard work, and for sharing this expertise with us. We look forward to working on other events with him in the future, and we know that both staff and students had a wonderful time learning and playing with him today.”

In addition to Dr. Lowenborg-Coyne, orchestra teachers Kristin Lombardo, Nicole Verderosa, Dom DePaola and Tom Schultheis participated in the event. Additionally, the Performing Arts Support Association (PASA) provided water and served dinner for the students and staff prior to the concert.

Inquiring Minds

In an effort to explore student interest in science and increase parental involvement, the North Babylon School District continued its Kids Inquiry Conference. Each year, students work with their parents to create a project that allows the children the opportunity to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

“Kids Inquiry Conference is a great opportunity to combine science, art, math, English language arts and research by bringing them all together in one large project,” said District Director of Math and Science Alison Offerman-Celentano. “It also gives students the opportunity to get an understanding of carrying out a long-term project, while bringing families together in the home.”

Added Nicole Guida, fifth-grade inclusion teacher and science coordinator at William E. DeLuca Elementary School, “The conference is a good opportunity for the students to go through the whole scientific process – from the start of their idea to the actual conference.”

Following the individual school conferences, one winner from every grade at each school will move on to compete in the Kids Inquiry Conference at Brookhaven National Laboratory in May, which the district has successfully participated in for more than five years.

With the assistance of physical education teachers Mario Fiore and Bill Munro, the students participated in the nationally recognized Jump Rope for Heart program, an event that raises money to help the American Heart Association fund lifesaving research on heart disease and strokes. The American Heart Association also funds the development of educational materials that teach the importance of heart health and staying fit.

MGV Mentoring Program Awarded Grant

For the last seven years, the Mentoring Program at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School has been going strong. This year, program coordinators Joanne Williams and Jennifer Hager applied for a grant through the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island and were awarded $300 for the program’s efforts.

The students and mentors recognized National Mentor Month in January by kicking off the month with a before-school holiday breakfast celebration. Mentees and their mentors came to school early and enjoyed a hot breakfast of pancakes and bacon cooked to order by Mr. and Mrs. Williams. Together, the students and mentors hosted their own New Year’s Eve celebration with noisemakers and hats while watching the “New Year’s Eve Countdown” in a PowerPoint Presentation. Each child received a $10 gift card to Target, donated by E.W. Howell, and a coupon for a free Happy Meal, donated by McDonald’s.

On January 26, the school celebrated National Mentor Thank You Day, in which the 23 staff members who volunteer were invited to a special breakfast in their honor. Each mentor received a gift card to Barnes and Noble, donated by E.W. Howell. Finally, each mentee thanked his or her mentor by hand delivering a red carnation and a personally written thank you card.

Spirit Week Takes Flight at Moses

Moses spirit and Bulldog pride were in full effect the third week of February as students, staff, and faculty at Robert Moses Middle School participated in their annual Spirit Week. This year’s theme, Moses Air, took students on a cultural adventure, where they made stops in Mexico, France, Turkey, and Jamaica before landing back in the United States for their final destination. The event was co-organized by the National Junior Honor Society, the Student Council, and their respective advisors, Michelle Russo and Kathleen Gusmerotti.

To culminate the spirit-filled week, the students dressed in their very best red, white, and blue outfits and participated in grade-level assembly programs. During each assembly, the students were divided into teams to compete in Americana trivia and face off against teachers in a basketball free throw competition. They also enjoyed a mini concert of American-themed songs performed by a local musician.

Students in the North Babylon School District joined together with schools across Long Island to celebrate the second annual P.S. I Love You Day on Friday, February 10. A West Islip High School student who lost her father to suicide created the day last year to spread love and to let others know that they are not alone.
Saving Lives in North Babylon

“Thank you for saving three lives,” was the greeting donors received from North Babylon’s Little Doctors volunteers, who were donned in their scrubs, as the donors exited the donation area to recover at the snack table. The sixth annual Little Doctors Blood Drive was the most successful one to date.

“We had a record number of donors at our blood drives and eager fourth-grade students on hand to provide assistance,” commented Science & Mathematics Director Alison Offerman-Celentano.

The Little Doctors volunteers made thank you cards for each donor to take home and walked them through every step of the donation process. All fourth-grade students received instruction from Long Island Blood Services on the components of blood and the necessity for donations prior to the blood drives at William E. DeLuca and Woods Road Elementary Schools. William E. DeLuca Principal Norann McManus, kindergarten teacher Jodi Rebholz, secretary Alice Roncs, fourth-grade teacher Tracy Jacquemain and sixth-grade teacher Michael Biesadecki were seen saving three lives each at the blood drive and provided a wonderful example for their students.

The drives yielded 42 donations at Woods Road and 44 donations at William E. DeLuca, saving a total of 258 lives!

Paper Pioneers: Closing the Loop

Fourth-grade students at Parliament Place Elementary School will be saving the environment, one piece of paper at a time. With the assistance of fourth-grade teacher and science coordinator Tracy Jacquemain, students will be making their own paper and exploring the process of recycling, renewable vs. non-renewable resources, environmental stewardship and conservation through the art of paper recycling.

During the project “Paper Pioneers: Closing the Loop,” the fourth graders will apply their knowledge of physical and life science concepts to explore how paper is made, what resources are consumed, and how the making of recycled paper can promote conservation of the earth’s finite resources. The closed loop arrows of the recycling symbol will be the recurring theme throughout the lessons that accompany this project.

“The project combines elements of science, math, art and English Language Arts into one unit of study,” remarked Science & Math Director Alison Offerman-Celentano, who won the $2000 grant that was used to implement the project. “When cross-curricular connections are made, students are given the opportunity to demonstrate their achievement of the learning objectives in a variety of ways, thus ensuring that all learners are reached.” Students will be able to bring what they have learned home in the form of a journal and paper that they created. In this way, they can educate their parents and community about the differences between renewable and non-renewable resources and how we can act to preserve the earth’s finite resources for future generations.

History Comes to Life

History came to life for North Babylon fourth-grade students at Parliament Place Elementary School, as the New York Historical Society brought its American Revolution in New York interactive program to the school. Students worked with a teaching artist to understand the causes, effects, and significance of the American Revolution, as this important event was brought to life through an exploration of paintings, documents, and objects from the Historical Society’s touch collection. The classes also discussed how the new nation began and flourished in New York, a topic that is part of the fourth-grade social studies curriculum. Artifacts the students were able to touch included colonial money, a musket ball, and a pick and brush, which were used to clean the muskets.

To prepare for the visit, all of the fourth graders wrote brief research reports on an important figure of the Revolutionary period. In addition, students in Anna Montuori’s class completed a literacy assignment of writing persuasive essays regarding the acts that preceded the war. The students also wrote “historical fiction letters” to King George requesting that he and Parliament cease and desist their taxation without representation.

“We thought that this would be a nice holiday treat for the students,” said Principal Drew Olson. “Listening skills are a major component of the English Langauge Arts assessment, so in addition to being a fun activity, they’re working on fine tuning important skills.”

Making the Holidays Brighter

North Babylon High School students took time out of their schedules to make the holidays a little brighter for families and community members one Saturday in December. The Students for a Better World Club, along with their advisor Veronica Murphy, hosted their annual Holiday Breakfast, where elementary students and their families were invited to attend a continental breakfast. While there, the young students created crafts, played games, and enjoyed the inflatable jumping house.

All of the funds raised throughout the morning were donated to Habitat for Humanity. Monique Summers, a single mother of two and the recipient of a student-built Habitat house in Bellport, was also in attendance. “If these students didn’t do what they do, I wouldn’t be able to afford my own home,” remarked Ms. Summers. “These students haven’t given me and my children a hand out, they’ve given us a hand up.”

Added Miss Murphy, “We choose to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity because the students actually get to work on the houses at the student build. They can meet the families that they are helping in person and work alongside them. Then we are able to see the finished project when it is completed. This year, we raised almost $1,000 at the Holiday Breakfast.”

Sing-along

The holidays were in full swing at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School in North Babylon as the student body gathered together for their annual Holiday Sing-along. During the annual event, the students sang and performed a mixture of holiday songs, with parents and classmates also getting the opportunity to sing along. Some of the holiday favorites performed by the choirs, band, and orchestra included “Jingle Bells” “Dreidel” and “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.” As an added visual, the younger Vedder students wore their homemade Santa, holiday tree, and reindeer hats.

“Today is an opportunity for the students to celebrate the holidays and to sing together, as well as to highlight all of the wonderful music they’re learning,” remarked Principal Kerry Larke.

Raising a Flag to Our Veterans

The students at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School in North Babylon came together for Veterans Day to honor the brave men and women who have served, and are currently serving, in our armed forces.

During their annual presentation, the students and local veterans gathered around the flagpole for a flag raising ceremony. As North Babylon High School Band Director Frank Rizzo played “Taps” on his trumpet, the American flag was slowly raised. Also during the ceremony, high school senior Francesca sang a beautiful rendition of the national anthem, and a schoolwide sing-along of “God Bless America” was enjoyed by all in attendance.

“We take this moment every year to raise our American flag in honor of our country and to remember our veterans and all they have sacrificed for our freedoms,” remarked Principal Kerry Larke.

Following the flag presentation, the local veterans moved into the auditorium, where the celebration continued with a slideshow presentation, songs, and refreshments.

Five vocalists and one instrumentalist from North Babylon High School have been chosen to represent their musical peers at the Suffolk chapter of the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education (NYSCAME) All-County Festival at Huntington High School on November 18, 2011. The finest high school musicians in Suffolk County have been selected to perform in ensembles under the leadership of skilled guest conductors. After many hours of rehearsals, these students will perform a concert of highly challenging works at a level approaching, if not equal to, that of professional ensembles. Students are selected by virtue of the score they received at the NYSSMA Solo Festival held the previous spring, which must rank among the highest in the county.

With music playing in the background, the kindergarten through fifth-grade students warmed up their muscles, got their blood flowing, and raised their heart rates as they did jumping jacks and stretched their limbs in preparation for their brisk run. Upon completion, the runners received breakfast prepared by the PTA.

NYSSMA Vocal Chairperson Teaches NBHS Students

There's a new face in the chorus room at North Babylon High School and the students are reaping the benefits! The district is proud to welcome Judy Leopold, who is replacing choral director Christina Henderson while she is out on maternity leave.

Mrs. Leopold was educated at the Eastman School of Music where she majored in piano and voice. Following her graduation, she founded the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, a community ensemble still in existence 30 years later.

Formerly the director of award-winning choirs at Hauppauge and Walt Whitman High Schools, Ms. Leopold is sought after as a vocal coach and piano accompanist on Long Island. She has served as guest conductor for Suffolk and Nassau Counties’ Honors Choirs, the Usdan Performing Arts Center, and the National Chorale's Annual Messiah Sing-In at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. She is founder and director of the Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island Women's Choir for the Women's League of UJA and is the choral chair for the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA).

“We are thrilled to have Ms. Leopold with us during Mrs. Henderson's absence and look forward to the masterpieces she will create with our lauded High School Concert Choir and ensembles,” remarked Dr. Kim Lowenborg-Coyne, Director of Art and Music Programs.

Creating Artwork from History

To commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month, the students in Karen Kennely’s art classes at North Babylon High School created their own masterpieces based on famous works of art by Hispanic artists. During class, the students learned about the artists’ history and their preferred forms of media. The students were then given textbooks and magazines featuring famous works of art by artists such as Pablo Picasso, El Greco, Diego Rivera, and Salvatore Dali. They selected one work from their chosen artist to draw, in oil pastel, an emulation of that piece. The student artwork will be submitted for display at the Town of Babylon’s 13th Annual Hispanic Heritage Festival, which will be held on October 29 at the Town Annex.

Toy Stories

If you’re looking to begin your holiday shopping early and want to know which toys will be best sellers in December, look no further than Kerrie Nocella’s sixth-grade class in North Babylon. The students were selected by the “Kidsday” section of Newsday to review more than 70 toys and games for an upcoming issue. Each of the students will be responsible for playing with the toy or game for two weeks, writing a detailed review, which will include their thoughts as well as their age-range recommendations, and rating the items on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the best.

“You are the reporters,” said Newsday representative Patrick Mullooly. “I want your words and your opinions.”

Added Ms. Nocella, “I thought that participating in Kidsday would be a great experience for my students to see their written work published. It gives them a great sense of purpose when they see that their ideas and written words are read by others and valued. I am hoping that some of the students will be intrigued by the idea of a career in journalism, and I also hope that they will be motivated to keep writing for an audience. In addition, it supports the writing skills units in my Academic Foundations class.”

Once the students have completed their assignment, a few of the toys and games will be given back to the manufacturers, with the remaining items given to the students to keep. The student reviews may be seen in a full-page spread in the December 11th edition of Newsday, with an additional four days of reviews.

Celebrating Community, Pride, and Tradition

Community pride was on display and a new tradition was born on Saturday, September 24, as members of the North Babylon High School Touchdown Club and varsity football team gathered with the Board of Education and administration to cut the ribbon on the new entrance to the football field.

“We are all here today because of the love and pride we have for our town, community, and most of all, our children,” stated Touchdown Club President Madeline Jordan. “It is because of that pride that we have come together to put this grand entrance onto our football field.”

Included on the brick entrance is a graphic representation of the district’s bulldog mascot. Prior to the varsity football game against Half Hollow Hills East, each member of the team began what is poised to become a longstanding tradition of touching the mascot for good luck and to remind themselves to play with pride.

The Touchdown Club would like to thank the following alumni and community members for the donation of their time, materials, and labor: Jack Argila, Billy Hellem, The Giaquinto Family, Kevin Hughes, Tom Fackner, Anthony Evangelista, Jason Pierce, Michael Schutt, Tom Mugavero, John Martin, Pete Smyth, and Joey Lombardo.

Science Toshiba Grant Award Implementation a Success at Belmont!!

The North Babylon School District Science Program, in cooperation with Belmont Elementary School, was the proud recipient of a $1000 grant award from the Toshiba America Foundation. The project entitled, “Paper Pioneers: Closing the Loop”, was designed to promote hands-on instruction about the importance of conserving natural resources. Students in Ms. Deborah Serino’s fourth grade classes learned the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources in the context of energy use and production of goods. They connected all of the environmental challenges facing our planet to population and then put their newly found knowledge into practice by learning how to make their own recycled paper. Students connected their science instruction to math through their understanding of proportions of paper to water to create pulp. Ms. Serino incorporated ELA into the project by having students create journals detailing their understanding of Earth’s resources and the art of making paper! The project was a huge success and can be repeated for years to come.
