It was a memorable morning in the District, as Woods Road Elementary School students, staff and district administrators welcomed local veterans to honor them for their years of service.

The day kicked off in front of the building, where students and veterans saluted the American flag, followed by a special assembly in the gymnasium. There, each veteran was introduced, along with their branch of military service. All students also sang “America, the Beautiful,” grades 4-5 sang “God Bless America,” and kindergarten-2nd grade sang “Grand Old Flag.”

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly and Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney were also in attendance to pay homage to local veterans. They also recognized several local heroes who recently took part in saving a man’s life from a house fire on Oct. 23 across the street from the school.

Suffolk County crossing guard Sharon Doogan, paraprofessional Karen Slizewski and parent Renard Lamour received proclamations from Councilman McSweeney. Security guard Larry Knapp was not present during the ceremony but was also commended for his efforts in the rescue.
