Encouraging New Friendships

The lunch room at Parliament Place featured a variety of colors like blue, yellow, orange, purple and red on Oct. 24 for the school’s Mix It Up Day. Before the start of each lunch period, students in grades K-5 were given a color and instructed to sit at the matching color-coded table after receiving their lunch.

While sitting at their assigned table, students were then encouraged to interact with new people and engage in conversation starter questions, which were provided at every table. Questions included, “What is your favorite video game?” “What will you be for Halloween?” “What do you do when you get home from school?” “What was your favorite holiday gift?” and more.

The purpose of the event was to encourage children to interact with others outside of their immediate circle of friends to develop new friendships, tolerance, and cultural awareness of others.
