In line with one of its goals to promote social-emotional literacy and community partnerships, the district has launched a one-to-one mentoring program in collaboration with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island. The “Bigs” Mentoring Program, being piloted this year between the the high school and Parliament Place, serves to develop the high school students as supporters, friends, and positive and consistent additions in the lives of the elementary school students.

Together, the mentors and mentees discuss and participate in activities focusing on respect, future goals, responding to peer pressure and responsibility. These themes are explored through interactive activities including group games and individual conversations. There are currently 24 high school mentors and 18 “littles” taking advantage of the program.
