Academic Team Flexes Mental Muscles

The varsity and junior varsity squads of the district’s Academic Team commenced their participation in various tournaments throughout the school year on Nov. 18. Motivated by the goal of building off their success from last year, both squads placed first in the southwest Suffolk County area, and the junior varsity team placed third overall in the entire Suffolk County region.
Both groups defeated Deer Park High School’s Academic Team to begin the year 1-0. Three days later, they traveled to Princeton University to compete in their first History Bowl tournament of the year. There, they qualified for the national championships, to be held in Washington, D.C., in April. In addition, sophomore Matthew Pecoraro qualified for the National History Bee championship, while sophomore Noah Rothstein qualified for the National Geography Bee championship. Going forward, the Academic Team will be competing once a month at Copiague High School against other high schools from southwest Suffolk County.
The varsity lineup this year is captain Zachary Thomas, Haggai Anglade, Matthew Pecoraro and Noah Rothstein; the junior varsity team is comprised of Ryan Arranz, Richard Joyce, Brett Manzo, Lily Meehan and Elpida Manolas.
