Mrs. Monti’s period 5 class discovered just how much horsepower they could generate by running up a flight of stairs.  In this experiment, students determined that the faster they ran up the stairs, the less time it took to do the same amount of work in getting to the top of the staircase and the more horsepower they could generate.  Although some of them were able to achieve one horsepower or greater over a short period of time, they concluded that the power that they generated wouldn’t be able to be sustained over a long period of time, as an actual horse could.  By completing this experiment, students gained hands-on experience in manipulating the variables on which power is dependent.
